Web site
WWW.adug.org.au is now officially running. An invitation is
extended to members to participate in developing interactive
software and content for the site.
Library:
There have been reports of material missing from the library.
Formal library procedures are being developed to augment or
replace the current honour system. In the meantime we have
established a policy of allowing only one book and one magazine
per member per month, and ask that all items be returned at the
following monthly meeting.
Meeting format:
As an experiment the meeting format has been changed to allow
more time for informal interaction. This has been achieved by
moving the committee meeting to another night. Feedback is
invited from members as to the value of the new format. If it is
not something that is of value then we will return to the old
format.
Incorporation:
We are considering incorporating the ADUG. Paul Spain talked
briefly about the pros and cons. There seemed to be few cons
(cost under $100) and the main pro was that there would be some
degree of protection in law for ADUG members. Somebody suggested
we should revisit our rules at the same time and I suggested that
those who were interested in this should contact Paul for a copy.
It was agreed that we would proceed toward incorporation, aiming
to have a short general meeting in December to formally approve
the move.
Here are just some of the points I managed to jot down.
Bai Ming asked about some problems she was having with setting aliases for remote Interbase servers. Paul Spain suggested checking the path to ensure that the correct host name was being specified as simply "browsing" might not be enough. There were also suggestions about checking that NetBeui was working correctly.
Paul Fraser asked how to ensure that Delphi starts in a specific directory. Keith Latham and others suggested creating a shortcut with the desired start directory specified in its properties.
Paul also advised that he has upgraded to D3.01 from D3. He reported that the help files seem to be a bit better. He also reported that the new MS Access drivers allow you to use the System.MDA files, thus enabling the security features in Access.
He also mentioned that the old version was reported to be no good with FAT 32.
Craig Van Nieuwkerk mentioned that the DCU file format had changed (again!)
Craig also asked how to make an EXE with D3 that doesn't need run time packages. Keith advised that you can set it as a project option. (NB: You can get to the necessary page via Project->Options->Packages or Component->Install Packages)
Keith Latham advised that the Delphi for SAP is now available.
Cher Page asked about training courses and books. I suggested for training courses she look at RMIT Training and Franklin Collins.
There were many suggestions for books, more than I can remember. I suggested that people should send me a paragraph or two on any books they recommend and I would post them to the web site.
The key note presentation of the evening was by Steve Forbes of OzmoSys who talked about the value of software version control and also gave a brief demonstration of his new TLib Add-ins for Delphi that will soon be part of the TLib for windows product.
As usual Steve's presentation was very informative and he had produced some excellent handout material. Many thanks Steve!
The formal part of the meeting closed around 8:15pm but many people stayed around and chatted and the meeting was finally ajourned to "Cafe on Bourke" at 9pm.
